— PROJECT DESCRIPTION

I've created a procedural building generator, aiming to great scalability and resourse efficiency. Generator is easily applicable for games and movies. The visual side of the project is heavily inspired by Chinese densely populated urban areas and Ukrainian pre-fabricated buildings.

 

— SIMPLE YET EFFECTIVE

All building parts and props were procedurally created in Houdini to maintain flexibility and reassembly between elements.

 

— CLEAR PATH

The small tweak in my setup allows me to avoid placing rooftop props in front of the roof exit door.

 

— SMART WIRES

Wires setup created by connecting points, that are "aiming" at each other on the concave sections of the buildings. Feel free to explore solutions from clever users of SideFX forum.

 

— CREATIVE CHOICES

Easy to use and art-directable parameters allow to generate buildings and city clusters to non-tech savvy users.

 

— BARE BONES

To achieve better scalability and lower resource consumption, I have made building generator based on just points, carrying only necessary attributes.

 

— SYMMETRY

Symmetry automagically created along wider part of each building.

 

— CLASSIC PROBLEMS

Balconies, canopies and, basically, all extruded elements are run through intersection analysis to avoid geometry penetrations.

 

— TOOLS USED

Modeling: SideFX Houdini
Rendering: Maxon Redshift
Compositing: The Foundry Nuke
Color grading: DaVinci Resolve

 

— TO MY FUTURE SELF

The next, revisited version of procedural building generator might include features such as asset placement based on wave function collapse algorithm, procedural texturing and shading, custom first floor with shops and a sprinkle of science fiction advertisements.
